Smith & Nephew has acquired US firm Leaf Healthcare, which specialises in medical technology.

One product in particular that was developed by the US company caught Smith & Nephew’s attention: a unique monitoring device that can be worn by patients when they’re in hospital. The device is designed to alert medical staff when someone needs to be turned over to avoid pressure sores, and also monitors a patient’s movements.

President of advanced wound management at the firm Simon Fraser explained that this was an important reason why Smith & Nephew made the acquisition, noting that this system is “highly complementary” to the company’s existing portfolio of wound management treatments and devices.

Mr Fraser commented: “Consistent with our initial strategic investment, Smith & Nephew is focused on providing not just products to treat conditions, but also supporting clinicians with technologies designed for prevention as well as treatment.”

He also explained that the company wants to help healthcare providers to reduce the cost of delivering care.

Hull-based Smith & Nephew has purchased Leaf Healthcare for an undisclosed sum, in its third acquisition of 2019.

Smith & Nephew also purchased Brainlab Orthopaedics earlier this year, and spent £500 million on the acquisition of Osiris Therapeutics.

Osiris Therapeutics specialises in regenerative medicine products, with its two biggest selling products named as Grafix and Stravix. The former is used to help acute and chronic wounds to heal, while the latter supports soft tissue repair.
